En la actualidad las contingencias externas, tales como dinamismo, volatilidad, incertidumbre, caóticos, complejos, ambiguos, hostiles y turbulentos impactan en el desarrollo y/o sobrevivencia de las organizaciones, frente a esta situación, implementan diferentes estrategias y acciones como respuesta a los impactos y cumplir con requerimientos del contexto. El objetivo de la investigación fue analizar las contingencias y explorar las respuestas que realizan las organizaciones, con los propósitos de lograr crecimiento económico y/o sobrevivencia y ventaja competitiva sostenible. La metodología, se aplicó una revisión sistemática de la literatura propuesta por la Academy of Management. Los resultados presentaron un aporte importante a la teoría organizacional y a la administración estratégica permitirá realizar investigaciones de las relaciones organizaciones—estrategias— entornos—desempeño en diferentes contextos.
